Abraham D. Sofaer

Abe Sofaer is the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in International Law and Diplomacy Emeritus at Stanford’s Hoover Institution. He has written extensively about international law and organizations. After law school at NYU, he clerked for J. Skelly Wright on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr.
He spent two years as a federal prosecutor and then 10 years teaching at the Columbia University School of Law. He was a federal district judge in Manhattan for six years and then the general counsel at the U.S. Department of State for five years under Secretaries Shultz and JamesBaker.
He is a founding member of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, a member of the National Council of WWF-US, and a supporter of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He serves as an advisor to private companies and is a member of the Board of the Koret Foundation.
