Sofía Jaramillo (@Sofiajaroto) is an international human rights lawyer specializing in the protection of civic space, with extensive experience in advocacy, strategic litigation, and technical assistance across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Currently serving as the Senior Staff Attorney for Civic Space at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, Sofía leads initiatives that empower human rights defenders, challenge restrictions on freedom of expression, association, and assembly, and drive systemic change through international and regional human rights mechanisms.
Sofía served as legal advisor to the UN Special Rapporteurs on freedom of expression and extrajudicial executions, shaping global digital rights discourse on surveillance, content moderation, artistic freedom, and gender-based violence. She co-led litigation efforts at the International Justice Clinic at the University of California, Irvine, advocating for digital rights protections before international courts. At Columbia University’s Global Freedom of Expression, she advanced strategic initiatives to uphold freedom of expression standards.
Her experience extends to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, where she worked with the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, advancing the rights of journalists, protestors, and defenders. Her work with organizations like Dejusticia, Civitas, and FLIP reflects her commitment to defending civic space through innovative legal strategies.
Sofía holds a law degree from Rosario University in Colombia and an LLM from Columbia Law School, where she was a Human Rights Fellow and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. She is also on LinkedIn.
