Jan Hessbruegge

Dr. Jan Arno Hessbruegge works for the New York Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and is also a Visiting Professor in the Department of International Law and Human Rights at the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (Costa Rica). In previous functions, he worked for the Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons, for the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and as the legal adviser of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea. Prior to joining the United Nations, he clerked at the Constitutional Court of South Africa. He holds a doctorate in international law from Viadrina European University (Germany), a Master of Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School (USA) and the Diploma of the Hague Academy of International Law.
