Janet Egan (LinkedIn – X) is a senior fellow with the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Her research explores the national security implications of artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on policies that protect and promote the AI advantage of the U.S. and its allies. She has a particular focus on how computing resources (“compute”) can be leveraged for effective governance of advanced AI systems.
Prior to joining CNAS, Janet was a director in the Australian Government Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She has applied experience working on policy at the intersection of national security, economics and international relations on issues like 5G security, cyber security, countering foreign interference, foreign investment and trade, and critical infrastructure security. She was a member of the Prime Minister’s taskforce on critical technologies and the inaugural Director of Policy in Australia’s Office of Supply Chain Resilience.
Janet holds an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA from Monash University in Australia.
