Gabriel Schoenfeld (@gabeschoenfeld) is a contributing editor at the American Interest and a member of USA Today’s Board of Contributors. He was senior fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC.  For nearly two years ending in November 2012, he was a speechwriter and senior adviser to the Mitt Romney for President Campaign. His essays on national security and modern history have appeared in many leading publications, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal,, Washington Post, Weekly Standard, New Republic, Atlantic, National Interest, National Affairs, and Commentary, where from 1994 to 2008 he was senior editor.  His two most recent books are A Bad Day on the Romney Campaign: An Insider’s Account (Penguin) and Necessary Secrets: National Security, the Media, and the Rule of Law (W.W. Norton).   Before joining Commentary, Schoenfeld was a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, where he founded the research bulletin Soviet Prospects. Schoenfeld was an IREX Scholar at Moscow State University and holds a PhD from Harvard University’s Department of Government
